The castle of Julius II in Ostia/Rome
GIULIO'S CASTLE
The castle, built for the village's defence, has a triangle shape with the base turned to the sea which once was very close to the castle's walls. Its construction goes back to the 1483/87 years when Sisto V was the Pope. The plan was given to the famous architect Baccio Pontelli helped by Giuliano Sangallo and the work was finished under the Cardinal Della Rovere's direction.
Today the castle is made of several fortified towers from which Martin V's tower, the castle's quat, rises up. The building is surrounded by a moat and it develops around a yard from where it is possible to reach and visit the rooms used for military services.Always in the yard there is a ramp whose walls were decorated by Baldassare Peruzzi and from where you can go up the parade ground and the 3rd floor made of three rooms.
When in the 17th and the 18th century Ostia was abandoned, the castle has been used as a hay storage and as a dormitory for the prisoners used for the excavation works in Ostia Antica archeological area.
